An 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit SF at 5:12 am on April 18, 1906.  This quake left over 3,000 people dead and many others homeless.  Businesses were temporarily relocated to Oakland.  However, two years later, San Francisco was rapidly recovering as reconstruction was being done at a furious rate.
